◆ Watchmaker & jeweller · Port Street · Stirling

The watch bench
and the making bench, under one roof.

A family-run watchmaker and jeweller on Port Street in the centre of Stirling, run by Stuart Macdonald and the bench since 1982. We service and repair watches in the shop rather than sending them away, fit batteries while you wait, and design and make rings on the premises.

THE WATCH BENCH · REPAIR AND SERVICING

The work most high-street jewellers send away, we do in the shop.

Stuart trained with Omega watch specialists, so a watch that needs more than a battery does not get posted off to a third party, it goes on the bench here. Mechanical and quartz, dress watches and the Swiss pieces other shops would rather not touch. The estimate is free, the work is guaranteed, and most repairs are back on your wrist in three to five days.

WHAT WE DO · PORT STREET

Two crafts, one counter, on Port Street.

Repair

Watch repair and servicing

Trained with Omega watch specialists, we repair and service many types of watch at the bench, not by courier to a third party. Mechanical and quartz, dress watches and the Swiss pieces other shops turn away. Free in-store estimate first, then the work, guaranteed, usually back in three to five days.

Battery

Watch batteries while you wait

The best-priced watch batteries in Stirling, fitted while you wait from six pounds. A high-quality cell, a fresh seal where the case takes one, and you walk out wearing it. No need to leave the watch with us for a battery.

Make

Rings made on the premises

Wedding rings, dress rings and bracelets designed and made here, not ordered in. Bring an idea, an old piece or a stone you want used again, and we talk metal, fit and budget at the counter before any work starts. Repairs and resizing of all jewellery, in-house at the same bench.

Brands

Nomination and the brand cabinet

The only Nomination composable-bracelet agent in the Stirling area, with the base bracelets and the links to build them up over the years. Also Radley, Limit, Accurist, Sekonda, Royal London, Willow Tree and Kit Heath, plus scrap-gold buying with an honest valuation across the counter.

SINCE 1982 · ON PORT STREET

Forty-odd years at the same bench, in the middle of Stirling.

D.S. MacDonald has been a watchmaker and jeweller at 58 Port Street since 1982, a few minutes below the Old Town that climbs to Stirling Castle on its crag. Family-run, still independent, and still doing the repairs and the ring-making in the shop rather than sending the interesting work elsewhere.

The diamond mark over the door and on the clock face is the shop's own, not a chain's. The same hands that service a Swiss movement in the morning size a Nomination bracelet at the counter in the afternoon.

THE THING WORTH CROSSING TOWN FOR

A watch repairer who still works on the movement.

Plenty of high-street jewellers will change a battery and stop there. The difference here is the bench: a watchmaker who trained with Omega specialists, working under a loupe on the movement itself, taking on the pieces that come back from elsewhere marked too difficult.

  • Servicing, not just a battery. Mechanical and quartz movements opened, cleaned and adjusted at the bench, with a case reseal where the watch takes one.
  • The watches others decline. An old Omega serviced after two other jewellers said it could not be done. The free estimate tells you honestly what is possible.
  • Both crafts in-house. The same shop that services a Swiss movement designs and makes a wedding ring by hand, so nothing of value leaves Port Street to be worked on.

QUESTIONS · FIVE WE GET MOST

Quick answers, then bring it in.

Can you fix a watch other jewellers turned down?

Often, yes. We trained with Omega watch specialists and do the work at the bench rather than sending it away. One customer brought in an old Omega after two other jewellers said it could not be done, and left with it serviced. Bring it in for a free estimate and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

How much is a watch battery, and do I have to leave the watch?

Batteries start at six pounds and are fitted while you wait, so there is no need to leave the watch with us. We use a good-quality cell and reseal the case where it takes one. It is the best-priced battery in Stirling and you walk out wearing the watch.

Do you actually make rings yourselves?

Yes, on the premises. Wedding rings, dress rings and bracelets are designed and made here, and we repair and resize jewellery at the same bench. Bring a picture, an old piece or a stone you would like to use again, and we talk it through at the counter before any work or cost is agreed.

How long do repairs take?

Most repairs are back in three to five days. Batteries are done while you wait. Anything more involved, a full watch service or a made-to-order ring, we will give you a time at the counter once we have seen the piece. There is a free in-store estimate before we start.

Are you really the Nomination stockist for Stirling?

We are the only Nomination composable-bracelet agent in the Stirling area. We carry the base bracelets and a wall of links, so you can start one and add to it over the years. Stuart will size and fit it at the counter so it sits right.
